DIFFERENTIAL GEOMETRY OF CURVES AND SURFACES 1. Curves in the Plane

چکیده
1. Curves in the Plane 1.1. Points, Vectors, and Their Coordinates. Points and vectors are fundamental objects in Geometry. The notion of point is intuitive and clear to everyone. The notion of vector is a bit more delicate. In fact, rather than saying what a vector is, we prefer to say what a vector has, namely: direction, sense, and length (or magnitude). It can be represented by an arrow, and the main idea is that two arrows represent the same vector if they have the same direction, sense, and length. An arrow representing a vector has a tail and a tip. From the (rough) definition above, we deduce that in order to represent (if you want, to draw) a given vector as an arrow, it is necessary and sufficient to prescribe its tail.

Lectures in Discrete Differential Geometry 1 – Plane Curves
The classic theory of differential geometry concerns itself with smooth curves and surfaces. In practice, however, our experiments can only measure a finite amount of data, and our simulations can only resolve a finite amount of detail. Discrete differential geometry (DDG) studies discrete counterparts of classical differential geometry that are applicable in this discrete setting, and converge...
متن کاملYet Another Application of the Theory of ODE in the Theory of Vector Fields
In this paper we are supposed to define the θ−vector field on the n−surface S and then investigate about the existence and uniqueness of its integral curves by the Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations. Then thesubject is followed through some examples.

Some aspects of the relation between differential geometry of curves and surfaces and (2+1)-dimensional soliton equations are discussed. For the (2+1)-dimensional case, self-cordination of geometrical formalism with the Hirota's bilinear method is established. A connection between super-symmetry, geometry and soliton equations is also considered.
متن کاملDifferential geometry of curves and surfaces
These are two books that together in a pair are intended to bring the reader through classical differential geometry of curves and surfaces into the modern differential geometry of manifolds. The first book, Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces, by Thomas Banchoff and Stephen Lovett, offers a complete guide for the study of classical theory of curves and surfaces and is intended as a te...
متن کاملHandout Four: Differential Calculus on Surfaces
We have just finished our study of plane and space curves, or, if you like, of vectorvalued functions of a scalar variable. The next unit of the course focuses on the differential calculus of surfaces in three-dimensional space: these include the case of scalar-valued functions of a vector variable, i.e., z = f(x, y). It turns out that that surfaces in R are most analogous to curves in the plan...
